This stream focuses on building the physical foundation of sustainable communities by leveraging restoring the natural systems—soil, water, and vegetation—that support life, to enhance environmental and social outcomes. E.g. Regenerative landscape design, stormwater management and natural water systems design, and forest garden and biomimicry inspired infrastructure implementation.
The Forest Garden Project is a youth-developed ecological restoration and education initiative that integrates principles of permaculture, agroforestry, and urban ecology to create productive, biodiverse green spaces, with ecosystem services that serve both people and the planet.
It reimagines underused public or institutional lands — such as parks, schoolyards, stormwater ponds, and riparian zones — as living laboratories where communities can learn, steward, and harvest in harmony with local ecosystems.
Conduct citizen science of the greenhouse gas impacts from storm water ponds, prototype engineering designs for data monitoring, develop open source data visualizations, develop pedagogical assets for curriculum use, and engage in community solutions building responses for developing adaptive natural infrastructure.
